BABINA Hospital, RIMS, IHI, Sky observe World Heart Day

Imphal, September 29 2024: As in other countries, World Heart Day was observed on Sunday at BABINA Hospital, Khabeisoi along with conduct of a free heart check-up camp in collaboration with Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Limited.

During the observance held under the theme "Use Heart for Action" to raise awareness about heart disease and preventive measures, BABINA Hospital senior consultant Dr Ksh Kala cautioned that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide, claiming over 18.6 million lives annually, with majority of fatalities occurring in low and middle-income countries.

He stressed the need for minor lifestyle changes including intake of nutritious foods, regular exercise and stress management, to maintain heart health and combat CVD.

World Heart Day plays a crucial role in reducing the global burden of heart disease by promoting preventive practices, regular health check-ups and healthy lifestyle habits, he said.

As part of the observance, doctors, nurses and non-medical staff of the Hospital took out a rally within the hospital premises, displaying banners and chanting slogans like "No Smoking", "No Alcohol", "Exercise Regularly", "Eat Healthy", "Control Blood Pressure", "Maintain a Healthy Weight" and "No Tobacco".

Meanwhile, the free heart check-up camp many 51 individuals including patients availed various services including assessment of body weight, blood pressure, elec trocardiograms, blood sugar tests, lipid profiles (cholesterol), thyroid function tests, hepatitis B and C screenings and microalbumin tests.

Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal in association with the Department of Cardiology also observed World Heart Day 2024 under the theme "Use Heart for Action", nearby the General OPD Block, RIMS Hospital, on Sunday.

Speaking at the event, RIMS director Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma emphasised the importance of regular health check-ups in preventing heart diseases.

"We must take proactive steps to monitor our health to stay healthy.

Each year, approximately 18 million people die due to heart-related conditions such as heart attacks.

It is essential for everyone to take initiative in preventing these diseases by checking their health regularly and maintaining a heart-healthy lifestyle," he stated, while also highlighting the importance of spreading awareness in the community to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular diseases.

RIMS MS Prof N San-jib Singh, Department of Cardiology head and Prof Dr Thokchom Sachin Deba Singh, doctors, nursing officials, staff and students of RIMS, who participated in the observance, committed to spreading the message of heart health through health check-ups, preventing heart disease through balanced diets, regular physical activity, and avoiding harmful habits like smoking.

Imphal Heart Institute (IHI) also observed World Heart Day at its Sagolband Moirang Leirak complex on Sunday.

As part of the observance, IHI chairman cum managing director Dr Kh Ratan Kumar signed an MoU with Narayana Superspeciality Hospital (NSH), Kolkata deputy general manager Saumik Dasgupta to provide latest and best healthcare treatment to the masses.

Free heart health checks including EGC, BP, 2D Echocardiogram and random blood sugar tests were conducted for 120 people including 16 children.

A public cardiac health awareness programme was also organised with RIMS Psychiatry Department former head Dr RK Lenin and IHI senior dietician Yumkham Renuca in attendance.

Meanwhile, Sky Hospital & Research Centre in association with Manipur Heart Foundation organised a free heart camp in connection with World Heart Day on the theme "Use Heart for Action", at the Hospital on Sunday.

During the camp, around 26 patients underwent free medical checkups as such as ECGs, blood sugar, and blood pressure checks and also received free medicines.

SKY Hospital chairman and chief cardiologist Dr L Shyamkishore appealed to the people to avail the benefits of such heart camps conducted by Sky Hospital and Manipur Heart Foundation onsite and various districts of Manipur from time to time.
