Flood water recedes, sand fill farmlands

Though the flood waters have started receding in Thoubal district, the farmers are now facing another issue as they are unable to identify their respective farmlands aftermath of the deluge.
The waters have receded in about 150 hectares of farmlands in Salungpham Kang Thokchao Paatli Loukon under Heirok assembly constituency but the field have been filled with sand brought by the flood, which has made it impossible to identify individual fields.
Media persons visited the said farmlands on Thursday and found that it had become an open ground with farmers unable to access their farms due to slushy condition.
Speaking to media persons, one S Chourajit lamented that in-spite of the flood waters receding they cannot restart agricultural activities as the field under deep layers of sand.
He then appealed to the department concerned to look into grievances of the farmers and extend help in removal of the sand from the farmlands.
On the other hand, Kang Yambem Administrative Committee chairperson Wahengbam Chouyaima emphasised that at a time farmers should be preparing to harvest their crop they face flood followed by their fields rendered unusable due to deposition of sand.
