Modern Subika art exhibition begins

An exhibition featuring modern Subika art by Manipur University (MU) Department of Fine Arts assistant professor Sapha Yumnam commended on Tuesday at the Department of Fine Arts exhibition hall.
The inaugural programme of the art exhibition, which will continue till January 30, was attended by MU vice chancellor professor N Lokendra Sirigh, School of Humanities dean professor Soibam Imoba Sirigh and Mutua Museum director Mutua Bahadur as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, professor Sapha Yumnam explained that Subika art is the type of art forms present in ancient Manipuri manuscripts known as 'Puya'.
As such art form is unfamiliar to the present generation, researchers need to find out whether such art form is still present, stressed the professor, while adding that the objective of modern Subika art form is to promote and preserve 'Subika art form' .
Professor Sapha also stated that the preservation system for the Subika art form in Archives is inadequate, adding that there is limited representation of the art form in the public domain.
_ In all, 74 art works are qn display at the exhibition along with a bronze sculpture.
The display also features paintings from the books 'And that is why: Manipur myths retold' and 'Feathers, fools, and farts: Manipuri folktales retold' .
