Senapati bans killing of Amur Falcon

Senapati district magistrate Mamoni Doley has issued an order restricting all from killing Amur Falcon, a migratory bird in Senapati district.
The order was issued subsequent to a letter from Senapati divisional forest officer on September 18 citing reports of rampant hunting of birds and wildlife including Amur Falcon in the district.
The order stated that arrival of Amur Falcon is expected in last week of September and roost till midweek of December in Senapti district.
This period is considered crucial in the life cycle of Amur Falcons.
As Amur Falcon is a Schedule IV bird under Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and hunting, sale and trade of such schedule animal is prohibited, anyone contravening provision in the said Act shall be liable for imprisonment up to three years or fined Rs 25,000 or With both, it noted.
In this connection, Senapati DM ordered for total ban on hunting, catching, killing and selling of Amur Falcon bird in the district with immediate effect.
The order also directed village authority concerned to oversee enforcement of the order and in case of reports of violation, the SDO/SDM, police and Forest Department concerned should take up appropriate action in accordance with the existing law under the provision of Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 .
