Imphal, October 18 2024:
Social Welfare minister Heikham Dingo has made a strong case for studying Puya (ancient manuscripts) which he termed as a crucial means for building a better and progressive society.
He noted this while speaking as chief guest at the inauguration of the today Meetei Puya Waree Leeba Changdamnaba (competition) at Lainingthou Sanamahi Shanglen, here, on Friday.
The competition being organised by Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board (LSTB), will continue till October 28 .
Minister Dingo highlighted that Manipur has been a sovereign kingdom since ancient times, with own constitution, languages, culture, religion, and indigenous games.
Maintaining that these distinct features of Manipur's civilization set it apart, he, nevertheless, expressed concern over the trend of the younger generation becoming increasingly disconnected from the rich cultural heritage passed down by the forefathers.
He then stressed the importance of understanding one's origins, traditions, and religious values, stating that Puya hold immense knowledge about the history and civilisation of Manipur.
Acknowledging LSTB's efforts in organising the competition, the minister said that such events could help renew cultural consciousness and foster a stronger sense of belonging.
The inaugural ceremony was presided over by LSTB vice-president Bidyapati Senjam alias Wakhal Lamjingba, with Manipur State Kala Akademi secretary Sunanda Thokchom attending as the guest of honour.
Floral tributes were paid to the portraits of departed Puya narrators during the event, as W Sanou and Ngangbam Leima performed 'Waree Phaibok' .
