Imphal, July 11 2026:
Assam Rifles organised two solemn wreath-laying ceremonies at the Assam Rifles War Memorial inside Keithelmanbi Garrison, Imphal West district, to honour the supreme sacrifice and conspicuous bravery of two decorated soldiers on their death anniversaries.
As per a release issued by HQ IGAR(S), on July 10, the garrison paid tribute to Rifleman (GD) Late Bhim Sain, Sena Medal (Posthumous), marking 24 years since he laid down his life during a counterinsurgency operation.
On 10 July 2002, while driving the lead vehicle of the Commandant's Quick Reaction Team from Moreh to Khundengthabi in Tengnoupal district, the convoy was ambushed with powerful Improvised Explosive Devices.
Despite sustaining grievous injuries, Rifleman Bhim Sain displayed exceptional presence of mind by steering the damaged vehicle out of the kill zone.
His final motivating words inspired fellow soldiers and helped save five lives before he succumbed.
A total of 166 personnel attended to offer floral tributes.
On July 11, 2026, the garrison commemorated Subedar Late Kehar Singh, Shaurya Chakra (Posthumous).
On 10 July 2003, acting on specific intelligence about an insurgent camp in Chandel district planning attacks and holding civilians hostage, Subedar Kehar Singh led troops from the front in Kakching district.
Despite sustaining fatal injuries in the ensuing gun battle, he neutralised a hardcore insurgent, leading to a significant recovery of arms and ammunition.
154 personnel participated in the ceremony.
Both events commenced with senior officials laying wreaths, followed by a ceremonial Guard of Honour.
Assam Rifles said the commemorations reaffirmed the force's finest traditions of professionalism, indomitable courage and selfless service to the nation.
