Indigenous Peoples' Day celebrated

Imphal, August 10 2025:
Centre for Research and Advocacy Manipur (CRAM) and Legal Aid Clinic, Nungbrung celebrated International Indigenous Peoples' Day on the theme "Advancing Indigenous Peoples Sustainable Development, Climate Justice & Human Rights in Manipur"' at Nungbrung village in Imphal East district on Saturday.
In a release, CRAM said that a cultural performance, a scene from, "Aboriginal Cry" by Akhoka Theatre, Manipur was performed at the celebration.
Documentary films, "Dams and Discontent in Manipur", and "Downstream Impacts of Mapithel Dam" were also screened during the celebration, highlighting the challenges of large dam building.
CRAM secretary Jiten Yumnam expressed that unsustainable development processes undermine indigenous peoples' relationship with their land, violate their human rights, harm the environment and the climate and foster multifaceted conflict.
He called for just climate solutions and to refrain from pursuing false climate solutions.
Khundrakpam Bomi Leima of Laikhong village and Kangabam Ranjana Leima of Ngamukhong village shared testimonies about Mapithel dam and Keithelmanbi barrage that blocked the Thoubal River and affect the villagers.
Youth Forum for Protection of Human Rights member Sadishchandra Takhel-changbam also shared that Manipur's land, forest, rivers are increasingly targeted for false climate change solutions.
The participants called for unity among the indigenous peoples of Manipur to protect the land, forest, rivers and natural resources of Manipur.
