Imphal, August 07 2025:
The Joint Action Committee against the Unnatural Death of Bashanti and Lanchenbi (Mama-Macha) has condemned the continued silence of the government and the failure of the magisterial enquiry to reveal truth behind the suspicious deaths of a widowed mother and her daughter nearly 10 months ago.
In a statement issued Thursday, the JAC questioned why the government has not yet made public findings of the enquiry into the deaths of Basanti and Lanchenbi, who were found dead on their bed in a highly suspicious manner on September 23, 2024, at Haoreibi Mayai Leikai in Imphal West.
Despite a government order issued on October 23, 2024, directing that the magisterial enquiry report be submitted within one month, no official report has been released till date.
The JAC raised questions over the prolonged delay.
"Has the government deliberately hidden the details of this suspicious death? Or, because the widowed mother and daughter had no one to support them, is the government protecting the culprits?" the statement asked.
The committee expressed deep concern over the lack of justice and transparency in a case that has gripped the public's atteption, particularly among those who continue to stand against crimes targeting women and children.
It urged the people to unite and take a strong stand to ensure justice for the victims and to prevent such tragic incidents from recurring.
The JAC reiterated that justice must not be denied simply because the victims had no one to speak for them, and called on the authorities to break their silence and bring the truth to light.
