Senapati, March 05 2025:
Residents of Lairouching village in Senapati district celebrated formal inauguration of their first-ever drinking water supply scheme under the NDB Project by the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Manipur.
Established in 1956, with a national highway running through its centre, the village had previously lacked such essential facilities.
The scheme was inaugurated by MLA Losii Dikho in the presence of PHED, Senapati executive engineer R Joel Rangnamei as the guest of honour.
Ng Joseph, principal PP Christian English High School, expressed the villagers' joy, noting that women had previously fetched water from a pond over a kilometre away each day.

A village leader highlighted that poor water quality had led to waterborne diseases, and scarcity was a recurring issue during dry seasons.
The new supply is expected to ease daily struggles and improve living standards.
EE Joel credited former PHE minister L Dikho for initiating the project and urged villagers to pay Rs 100 household water tax - Rs 80 for maintenance arid Rs 20 to the government.
He emphasised the importance of forest conservation to sustain water sources.
MLA Dikho praised the village's natural advantages, including its proximity to the Barak River, fertile land, and strategic highway location.
He encouraged tourism initiatives and cleanliness efforts, noting similar projects had been implemented in other water-scarce areas during his tenure.
The event concluded with cultural performances, marking a milestone in the village's development.
