Teachers plan protest on September 5

In continuation of its countrywide letter campaign from August 31, 2024, All India Federation of University and College Teachers' Organisations (AIFUCTO) has announced that teachers will wear black badges on Teachers' Day as a mark of protest against the current state of education.
In a release issued by AIFUCTO on Tuesday, the apex body of college and university teachers in the country said that teachers across the country will wear black badges on September 5 while teaching, participating in functions, etc.
The organisation also expressed its support for the Demonstration - Satra-Shikshak Ekta March, organised by JFME, from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar, New Delhi on the same day.
According to the release, AIFUCTO has been seeking appointment with the Union Minister of Education and the UGC Chairman for a long time, but to no avail.
In the meanwhile, the state of higher education has deteriorated significantly, while the central government remains unresponsive, as if everything is under control, it added.
Apart from its letter campaign running until September 15, AIFUCTO will hold dharna and protests in colleges and universities on September 20, a state level convention/protest on October 4, and a protest in front of the Parliament on November 19 .
The teachers' body has strongly opposed the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) while demanding the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme.
AIFUCTO's key demands include repeal of NEP 2020, increase of budget allocation on education to 10%, abolition of NEET, CUET and other centralized tests, discontinuation of clustering, merging and phasing out of standalone and single stream educational institutions, restoration of Old Pension Scheme & uniform retirement age at 65 for all universities and college teachers across the country, extension of UGC scales of pay & service conditions to all teachers of grants-in-aid institutions of all states, immediate disbursement of the 50% share of the 7th pay revision outlay to the state government, granting of professorship under CAS upon fulfilment of requisite criteria to all teachers in government & government aided colleges across the country, delinking of PhD requirements from CAS promotion process to associate professor and professor, and implementation of the UGC directive regarding the extension of date for RC/OC, among others.
