Imphal, July 30 2024:
A potentially catastrophic train accident was averted, thanks to the swift actions of the Territorial Army on Tuesday.
A goods train, consisting of 21 wagons of rice, was coming to Khongsang in Noney district when excessive rainfall in the early hours of the morning washed away the ballast - the gravel or crushed stone that supports the tracks - between T-14 P2 and T-15 P1 .
This damage posed a significant risk of track instability and misalignment.
A Territorial Army patrol deployed along the Jiribam to Khongsang railway line identified the track damage and promptly alerted authorities about the impending danger.
The railway authorities were immediately informed, and the incoming goods train was stopped at Kambiron by Army personnel.
The quick identification of the damaged track and the immediate action taken by the Territorial Army prevented what could have been a major train accident, stated a spokesperson for the Territorial Army as well as confirmed by PRO Defence.
