Stop disturbances affecting education sector: DESAM

Widespread demonstrations were staged on Saturday in the district in connection with the XVII Disturbance Free Education Zone Demand Day-2024 organised by Coordinating Committee of Disturbance Free Education Zone Demand, which is a joint body of 14 education related organisations formed on July 5, 2008.As part of these demonstrations, a sit-in protest was staged by students and teachers of Thoubal College at their campus.
Speaking at the event, Committee's member and DESAM secretary general N Thothoiba stated that three disturbances presently faced by education state in the state due to the activities of UG groups, government and CSOs and student bodies must stop immediately.
He continued that as per the resolution passed on Disturbance Free Education Demand Day observance held at Manipur College on July 5, sit-in protests are being held from July 25 till now.
Thothoiba asserted that UG groups should desist from pursuing unreasonable demands from education institutes which hamper their functioning and endanger career of students; the government should also stop transferring teachers indiscriminately, corruption in recruitment of teachers, lack of infrastructure in government institutes, nepotism and favouritism along with rationalise posting of teachers and implement the education policies enacted by it.
He also urged civil society organisations and student bodies not to interfere in the admission process of education institutes.
On the other hand, a peace rally was taken out by students and teachers of Memorial Model Academy, Yairipok Bazar from their school campus to Yairipok Keithel holding banners and placards inscribed with slogans like "Do not make unaffordable demand to schools", "we want to study in peace", "government should pass a rule to ensure at least 220 days of classes in a year", "keep education disturbance free zone", etc.
Meanwhile, a sit-in protest was staged at Thoubal Athokpam Keithel by teachers of 215 schools under ZEO Zone III.
Speaking to media persons, one of the protesting teachers, Athokpam Basanta appealed against giving undue monetary pressure on teachers and let them focus on producing good students.
Similarly, a protest was staged by students and teachers of Evergreen Flower School, Thoubal Ningombam in front of their school during which they chanted slogans demanding no untenable demand against schools, ensure disturbance free education zone, we want to study in peace, etc.
Meanwhile, a sit-in protest was also staged in connection with the Disturbance Free Education Zone Demand Day at AJAD English School, Meitram, Imphal West.
Our Jiribam correspondent also reported that a poster campaign was launched by DESAM Jiribam District Council at Jiri College and various schools in the district in connection with 17th Education Free Zone Demand Day on Saturday.
Apart from urging the government to stop politicisation of education, the poster campaign also demanded not to make unaffordable demand in education sector and do away with corruption, nepotism and favouritism in education, etc.
