SFM hailed for increasing pass pc in Govt schools

Imphal, July 26 2022: Chief Minister N Biren has attributed the substantial rise in pass percentages of Government schools in this year's Class X and Class XII exams conducted by Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BOSEM) and Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM) to the State Government's School Fagathansi Mission (SFM) .

The Chief Minister made this assertion while discussion a motion raised by Opposition Member K Ranjit in the State Assembly today on the poor performance of Government schools in Class X and Class XII exams.

It is true that Government schools have been passing through a phase of downfall and it has been a chronic problem since many years back, the Chief Minister admitted.

He stated that the SFM was launched to reverse this trend and revive Government schools.

Now Government schools have recorded higher pass percentages and admission in Government schools has grown by 29 per cent, Biren said.

Raising the motion, K Ranjit pointed that there is not a single Government school student in the top 20 merit list of both the Science stream and Commerce stream of this year's Class XII exam.

Likewise, no student from Government schools could make it to the top 25 merit list of this year's Class X exam, Ranjit said.

Altogether 308 Government schools gave the Class X exam conducted by BOSEM but 47 of them drew blank, he added.

A total of 8306 students from Government schools, 1611 students from Government aided schools and 29,316 students from private schools gave this year's Class X exam.

These figures gave a clear picture of how Government schools are doing these days, Ranjit asserted.

Pointing out that one tog-per of Class XII exam is a student of private school while the student's parents are Government school teachers, the Congress MLA said that even Government school teachers are sending their children to private schools which implies that people's faith in Government schools has plummeted to almost nil.

He then asked if there was any flaw in the SFM and whether the mission was serving its purpose.

Taking part in discussing the motion, Education Minister Th Basanta Kumar maintained that Government schools are now improving.

Of the total 43 subjects of Class XII, Government school students secured highest marks in 15 subjects.

The pass percentage too rose remarkably from 61.96 per cent in 2019 to 89.23 per cent this year.

Private schools' pass percentage was 90.28 per cent, Basanta Kumar said.

In class X exam too, Government schools recorded a much improved pass percentage of 60.48 per cent as compared to around 54 per cent during the past 10 years, the Education Minister said.

In addition, 49 Government schools recorded 100 per cent pass percentage and this is a result of the Government's SFM, he said.

The Government has been working to produce toppers from amongst Government school students but improving pass percentage is more important at the moment, he continued.

The Government has initiated due measures to hold coaching classes for Classes X and XII ahead of board exams at the district level after selecting 10 students from each school, he informed the House.

These coaching classes would last for 40 to 60 days, according to the Education Minister.

The Government has also made arrangements to give counselling and coaching class to failed students, Basanta Kumar added.

The motion was later withdrawn.
