Kangpokpi, September 25 2024:
Kuki-Zo people in Kangpokpi district are set to hold a massive rally on Thursday, followed by a two-day total shutdown across Sadar Hills on September 27 and 28 .
The protest is in response fo alleged false intelligence reports claiming infiltration of 900 Kuki militants from Myanmar into Manipur.
This decision was finalised during a joint meeting of civil society organisations at the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) office here.
The meeting was convened to discuss the growing concerns over the intelligence reports, which the community believe are aimed at tarnishing their image and escalating tension in the state.
Speaking to the media, CoTU general secretary Lamminlun Singsit reasoned that the rally and subsequent shutdown are direct response to baseless allegations made by the state government and supported by the majority community.
The mass rally will be organised under the aegis of CoTU and held at Kangpokpi town to raise awareness and protest alleged misinformation campaign against the Kuki-Zo people.
Additionally, the complete shutdown across Sadar Hills is intended to draw the attention of the central government.
Singsit urged the Centre to intervene in the matter, emphasising the need for justice regarding the false intelligence reports.
In his address, Singsit also reiterated the long standing demand of the Kuki-Zo community for a Union Territory with Legislature under Article 239(A) of the Indian Constitution.
He called for an expedited resolution to this political demand, which, he said, would address the grievances and ongoing issues faced by the community.
