Kuki aggression continues, police check post burnt

Jiribam, June 20 2024:
After a couple of days of uneasy calm, Kuki militants resumed unleashing violence in Jiribam district using bombs and guns, and also set ablaze a police check post in Leingangpokpi on Wednesday night.
The incident occurred on Wednesday around 10 pm.
The police checkpost burned by the Kuki militants is located at a distance of around 6 km from Jiribam police station in Leingangpokpi along NH 37 .
Phaital Kuki village of Tamenglong district is located on the opposite side of the police checkpost across the national highway.
Upon receiving information of the arson, a police team along with two bulletproof vehicles of Commando and fire service team rushed there.
However, Kuki militants, who were holed in at Phaital village attacked the police team.
The fire tender could not reach its destination consequently.
Additional police personnel in two Casspir vehicles also rushed to the spot leading to a fierce gunfight for around 20 minutes.
Locals reported hearing sound of explosives used in the gunfight.
Residents of Gularthol Meetei village, adjacent to the spot, retreated to Gularthol Bazar, some half km away from the spot, to avoid getting caught in the gunfight.
Joint security team of Tamenglong district police, Assam Rifles and CRPF carried out search operation in Phaital village only on Thursday morning.
There are no reports of any arrest or seizure of arms in the operation.
Mention may be made that Phaital village has a unit of Assam Rifles since May last year.
