Commitment essential for beekeepers: Director

Commitment and a departure from traditional practices are crucial for the success of beekeeping, according to horticulture and soil conservation director K Debdutta.
Speaking at the inauguration of a seven-day state-level basic training programme on beekeeping held at the conference hall of the directorate of horticulture and soil conservation, here, on Tuesday, Debdutta emphasised the need for modern knowledge and practices in beekeeping to enhance farmers' incomes.
The inaugural function was attended by Debdutta as chief guest, MBHM mission director Chungong Pamei as president while horticulture and soil conservation additional director Md Zakir Hussain Khan and district officer (Thoubal) Malemnganba Meetei were guests of honour.
Debdutta highlighted that previous training programmes have not brought significant success, indicating a need for a change in mindset.
He cited the example of Dabur honey being restricted in Germany and the US due to adulteration claims, stressing the importance of honest practices and hygienic production to penetrate international markets.
Additional director Md Zakir Hussain Khan pointed out the high demand for pure honey in international markets.
He encouraged farmers to strive for quality and purity in honey production to boost their incomes.
He also noted the potential of honey byproducts in manufacturing cancer medicines and cosmetics, presenting further opportunities for income generation.
The training programme aims to acquaint farmers with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in beekeeping, ultimately contributing to their economic upliftment.
