Imphal, May 18 2024:
A one-day informative and interactive Session on 'Collection Drives on e-Waste Management' was organised by Environmental Club & IQAC, Manipur College in collaboration with Karo Sambhav (Cohesive e-Waste Movement) Private Ltd, at the premises of the college in Singjamei Pishumthong on Saturday.
The session was attended by Manipur Pollution Control Board environmental engineer Waikhom Roshan as chief guest; Manipur College principal Dr W Shambhu-nath Singh as president and Environmental Club Manipur College president Dr Th Premita Devi as guest of honour.
In his speech, Waikhom Roshan mentioned the presence of a Producer Responsibility Organisation with regard to e-waste management.
In India, there are many different brands producing varied electronic items, each of them having the responsibility to collect electronic waste.
However, they hand over the responsibility to a Producer Responsibility Organisation, due to its inability.
In Manipur's context, KARO Sambhav Private Ltd is one such Producer Responsibility Organisation working actively.
The organisation has the responsibility to make the masses aware about where to dispose, handover and manage e-waste properly as they contain highly neuro toxic substances such as mercury, lead, lithium, etc., he said, while highlighting the objective of the session.
Dr Th Premita said that the Environmental Club of Manipur College has been actively participating in environmental conservation activities.
So far, the Club has organised tree plantation drives including medicinal plants, installation of e-dustbins, plastic bottle banks and observance of World Environment Day.
During the session, Karo Sambhav Imphal Centre specialist Krishnananda explained to the students about the need for e-waste management and how to manage the same, as resource person.
