Imphal, April 18 2025:
All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union (AMGSU) on Thursday observed the 11th Martyrdom Day of Tilak Poudel, who lost his life in a police crackdown during mass protest on April 18, 2014, at Kanglatongbi.
The protest erupted in response to the rape of a minor Gorkha girl, and Poudel's death became a symbol of the community's struggle for justice, an AMGSU statement said.
To mark the occasion, AMGSU held a candlelight vigil and offered floral tributes at Poudel's portrait at the Kanglatongbi Mandir waiting shed.
The event was jointly organised by AMGSU and'its local units.
AMGSU expressed deep gratitude to the civil society organisations that supported the victim's family and paid tribute to the 26 individuals who sustained injuries during the agitation.
Among them was Bhim Bahadur Karki, who had suffered critical injuries.
Several dignitaries attended the memorial, including AMGSU leaders, members of Kanglatongbi Gram Panchayat, representatives from the Nepali Sahitya Parishad and Manipur Gorkha Welfare Union, principals of local schools, and women's groups.
The family of Tilak Poudel was also present.
Reaffirming its commitment, AMGSU said it would continue to honour Poudel's legacy and uphold the values of justice and sacrifice he stood for.
