Imphal, November 17 2024:
All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM) condemned the attack at the office of The Sangai Express located at Sega Road Thouda Bhabok Leikai on Saturday.
In a joint release, AMWJU and EGM informed that an emergency meeting was convened at Manipur Press Club in connection with the attack.
Stating that attacking office of a media house at this crucial juncture is not a sensible act, the release appealed not to repeat such acts of vandalism.
Media persons have been working relentlessly to provide information to the people since the onset of the unrest in Manipur, the release mentioned while reminding that many reporters on duty also subjected to assault by security forces.
The release further appealed to all concerned to not obstruct the movement of reporters, editorial staff, printing staff, hawkers and other media personnel as much as possible.
Meanwhile, Manipur International Youth Centre (MIYC) denounced the vandalism on the office of The Sangai Express.
While commending press and electronic media for working around the clock, to update the public, it reminded several incidents of harassment and assault of media persons by security forces while trying to cover news.
Yet, they have been working amidst such troubles to disseminate information, it lauded.
Subsequent to recovery of bodies of some among the six missing women and children abducted by Kuki militants, there was mass public protest on Saturday with mobs storming houses of MLAs and vandalising their properties.
However, it is unfortunate that the office of The Sangai Express was senselessly vandalised, MIYC condemned, while appealing not to repeat such act on media houses.
