Thoubal, January 15 2025:
Thoubal deputy commissioner (DC) Ahanthem Subhash launched National Road Safety Month, which is observed nationwide from January 1 to 31, with an awareness programme at Lilong Keithel on Wednesday.
Speaking at the programme jointly organised by Thoubal district administration, and National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), DC Subhash informed that the month-long campaign is held every year with an aim to reduce death and injuries caused by road accidents.
He noted that since the completion of NH-102/Trans-International Highway in the district, there has been a rise in the number of accidents.
As per the report by the district Transport Department, last year, 90 e-challans were issued and Rs 6.15 lakh collected as fine from traffic violators, while Traffic Police collected collective penalty amount of Rs 49,000, Subhash revealed, while pointing out that the total sum of monetary penalty underscores many vehicle operators defying road rules.
He further urged people to follow traffic guidelines, and called upon parents and guardians not to encourage underage driving.
The event was also attended by Thoubal district transport officer Hemochandra, NHIDCL officials, Lilong Municipal Council caretaker chairperson and officials.
In connection with the programme, a free eye camp was also organised by the District Hospital, Eye Department.
