MLA highlights teacher shortage, poor infra in Govt schools

Wangoi MLA Kh Loken raised strong dissatisfaction over shortage of teachers and inadequate infrastructure in government schools, saying that the problems have caused a sharp decline in student enrolment.
He made the remarks during a one-day discussion on "Development of School Education in Wangoi Assembly Constituency" held at his Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai residehce on Sunday.
The event jointly organised by the MLA and Zonal Education Office (ZEO), Wangoi, Imphal West II, was attended by Wangoi ZEO Arambam Anilkumar, and headmasters and teachers from various government Schools.
Kh Loken said that the shortage of manpower and resources is a state-wide problem that must be urgently addressed.
"How can students enrol in a school that does not have teachers?" he posed, adding that proper classrooms, furniture, and basic amenities would help make schools' more appealing.
He observed that even poor families opt for private schools to secure quality education for their children.
The MLA also criticised political interference in teachers' transfers, Cautioning that it hinders efforts to staff schools in need.
He announced plans to install biometric attendance systems in all government schools and colleges in Wangoi to ensure teachers attend regularly.
ZEO Anilkumar called for full implementation of the National Education Policy, upgrade teaching methods, and merit-based appointments for principals and headmasters to improve school performance.
