Distinguished musicologist Laishram Birendrakumar who had been honoured with Sangeet Ratna Award expired this morning at his Yaiskul Hiruhanba Leikai.
Birendrakumar was born to Laishram Tomaljit and Laishram (O) Ibemhal on December 8, 1920 .
For his outstanding contributions in the field of music and literature, Birendrakumar was conferred Sangeet Bhushan (1991) by Manipur Sahitya Parishad, Manipur State Kala Academy Fellow (1991-92), Srimad Paramhans Yogendranath Giri Award (2003), Moirangthem Pahari Life time Award (2007) and AMMIK's Life Time Achievement Award (2004) .
He was awarded Doctor of Literature by President Pranab Mukherjee in 2014 .
Laishram Birendrakumar is also known for his exhaustive research works on Manipuri tribal music and Pena.
Meanwhile, a number of organisations have condoled the demise of Laishram Birendrakumar.
They included Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Leimarol Khorjeikol, Manipuri Literary Society, Manipur State Film Development Society, Patriotic Writers Forum Manipur and the Apunba manipur Matam Ishei Kanglup (AMMIK) .
