Sale of handicraft items held at Sajiwa jail

One day sale of handicraft 'Mora' seats, candles, baskets, etc., made by inmates of Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa was held on Thursday.
The hand-made products were inspected and encouraged by commissioner (home) N Ashok Kumar, along with other officials of the jail.
Mention may be made that various vocational training programmes have been provided to the inmates, with an objective to bring them to the mainstream, for self-sustenance and to get self-employed.
In this regard, Central Jail, Sajiwa superintendent SK Bhadrika informed that 'Jail Industry' was started in 201415, and since then different vocational and skill development training programmes were conducted for the inmates.
It may be mentioned that hand-made products were even sold and showcased at the Sangai Festival in 2018.Section for carpentry is also in the pipeline.
Due to a smaller number of convicted prisoners and under trial prisoners (UTPs), handicraft productivity is also low compared to other states, he added.
Emphasising importance of such initiatives, the superintendent affirmed that these programmes not only help inmates reintegrate into society upon release but also provide them with livelihood opportunities, enhance creativity, and encourage innovative thinking for a better future.
