Imphal, July 31 2025:
National People's Party (NPP) MLA Khuraijam Loken on Thursday criticised the Centre's decision to extend President's Rule in Manipur for another six months, and urged Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs to prioritise the state and its people over party ideology.
Talking to The People's Chronicle, Loken pointed out that the extension came despite the absence of armed skirmishes in recent months, which had created a conducive environment for installing a people's government.
Even if the Centre permits government formation near the end of the current term, it would be a hollow government without actual authority, and those in power would likely turn their attention to the public for fund collection.
The way the Centre is dealing with Manipur, there is no chance of a government being installed unless the civil war in Myanmar is resolved.
MLAs have been reduced to nothing, except for the monthly salary and local area development funds, Loken said.
He recalled that BJP formed its first government in the state with NPP's support.
In the current term, the NPP holds six effective seats after the death of one MLA, leaving the party unable to influence the political deadlock.
He blamed the chief minister's incompetency for bringing to the present chaos, and said that it is high time for BJP legislators to put the state's interest ahead of party considerations.
Loken also expressed resentment over the sidelining of elected representatives, citing the Durand Cup opening at Khuman Lampak, where he said MLAs were deliberately not invited, calling it a "humiliating act" against the public's representatives.
