Imphal, May 26 2025:
The Manipur chapter of the North-east Educator's Conclave titled "eduELEVATE", was held today at the Imperial Hall, Classic Grande in Imphal.
The event was organised by the Assam Down Town University on the theme, "Implementation of NEP 2020 in North East States with special reference to Manipur".
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Rajeev Sarmah, faculty of science, Assam Down Town University, said the conclave is focused on the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in North East States, with a special focus on Manipur.
He said that the NEP 2020 is a comprehensive education reform which came into force on July 29, 2020, replacing the previous National Policy on Education (NPE) 1986 .
He mentioned that the NEP 2020 aims to modernize India's education system by making it more holistic, flexible, and student-centered, while also promoting multidisciplinary learning and a student-centered approach that encourages creativity, critical thinking, and lifelong learning.
He continued that the NEP 2020 aims to foster linguistic diversity by promoting the use of local language as the medium of instruction, particularly in early grades.
"The NEP emphasizes a flexible curriculum that allows for student choice and caters to individual learning needs, while also incorporating indigenous knowledge systems and vocational education relevant to the North East region", said Prof Rajeev while adding that the NEP also aims to bridge the remote learning gap by integrating technology into education and ensuring accessibility for all, including students in remote areas.
He also shared that the NEP faces challenges in implementation, including infrastructure deficits, teacher shortages, and the digital divide.
"Addressing these requires increased investment in infrastructure, teacher training and recruitment, and closing the digital divide through technology integration", he added.
On Manipur's education landscape, Prof Rajeev said that as per 2011 census, the State boasts a literacy rate of 76.9 %, exceeding the National average.
"Manipur has 3 Central Universities, 3 State Universities, 34 Government Colleges, 17 Government Aided Colleges, 4617 schools and over 50 Private Colleges", he added.
Furthermore, Prof Rajeev emphasized the importance of developing and promoting localized digital content to enhance education and bridge the digital divide, particularly in rural areas of the State.
The conclave brought together educators, policymakers, and innovators from across Manipur under one roof to engage in impactful dialogue, celebrate excellence, and pioneer the future of learning.
