Imphal, November 25 2024:
Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) has taken up a case regarding the deactivation of social media accounts belonging to teenage climate activist Licypriya Kangujam.
In a complaint, lodged by her mother K Bidyarani, the commission was urged to intervene and restore Licypriya's access to her 'X' and Facebook accounts, with the commission registering the same as Case No 6/11/2024-MCPCR.After hearing the counsel representing Licypriya, the MCPCR directed the commissioner of home department, Manipur, to furnish detailed report explaining the reasons for the deactivation of the accounts.
The report is to be submitted by December 4, with the next hearing scheduled for December 5 .
The issue cropped up after Licypriya, claimed her Facebook account was restricted following her remarks on the recent killings in Jiribam.
On X', she alleged that the move was an attempt to silence her voice, while asserting, "No amount of threats can silence my voice".
She also questioned Meta and Facebook for restricting her account, stating that she had not violated any community standards or policies.
Licypriya further alleged that the restrictions were imposed under pressure from authorities, sharing a Facebook notification citing Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, as the basis for the restriction.
She questioned if her criticism had prompted action at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
