Manipur State Museum celebrates foundation day

The 55th foundation day of Manipur State Museum was celebrated at its auditorium located near Imphal Polo ground, here, on Monday.
The function was attended by Art & Culture Commissioner M Joy, director K Dinamani and Manipur State Commission for Women chairperson Dr K Sobita as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Manipur State Museum curator Mrinashree Mairembam recounted that the museum was inaugurated by former Prime Minister (late) Indira Gandhi.
To celebrate its foundation day, a three-day workshop on Indigenous Pottery Making was held from September 20 to highlight significance of pottery in Meetei civilization.
The curator said that pottery has deep roots with Manipuri culture, playing a role in every aspect of Meetei life, from childhood to death.
Pottery is not only humanity's first craft but also vital component of archaeology, essential for all cultural and religious activities among the Meeteis, she said.
Mrinashree also stated that the workshop was participated by around 100 individuals, including students from Manipuri University of Culture and Ancient History and Archaeology Department of Manipur University, along with faculty members.
Additionally, participants from seven pottery making regions of Manipur including Andro, Nungbi and Thongjao contributed to discussing the unique techniques used in their pot-making.
The pots crafted during the workshop were also showcased in an exhibition opened to the public as part of the celebration.
