Ethnic foods exhibited at Turn event

Department of Food Science and Nutrition of College of Community Science (CCS), Tura under Central Agricultural University (CAUj, Imphal, observed World Food Day with an exhibition and sale of ethnic foods on Wednesday.
The observance held under the theme 'Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future,' focused on promoting food security, dietary diversity, and cross-cultural exchange, according to a statement of CCS.
Inaugurating the event, CCS dean Dr Jyoti V Vastrad stressed the importance of consuming locally sourced and seasonal foods to ensure nutrition security.
She highlighted how these foods not only support better health but also contribute to sustainable food systems and environmental conservation.
The event organiser, Dr Natasha R Marak, said that the exhibition is aimed at encouraging dietary diversification by introducing participants to traditional foods from various Indian cultures.
By learning about the nutritional value and cultural significance of regional ingredients, attendees could gain insights into healthier eating practices, she said.
Students and staff members prepared an array of ethnic dishes including Meghalaya's 'jadoh', 'singju' of Manipur, kapa, kelichana, jakep, and pitha of Garo tribe.
The exhibition also featured South Indian delicacies like 'idli', Khasi traditional items such as 'dohsniang neiiong' and 'pukhlein' and Mizoram's 'chakkawh tauh' and 'arsa buhchiar' .
Other innovative dishes like quinoa stir-fry also made an appearance, blending modem trends with tradition.
The event celebrated India's cultural diversity and highlighted the significance of indigenous foods in promoting health and sustain ability.
"By exploring these traditional foods, participants not only enjoyed delicious dishes but also deepened their understanding of the need for diverse and nutritious diets in building a better future," the statement added.
