Awareness on waste management conducted

A one-day awareness programme on waste management was conducted by Help and Socio-Economic Development Organisation, Keirak under the aegis of Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change at Mantak village community hall under Wabagai assembly constituency on Sunday.
The programme was attended by MPCB chairman and Wabagai MLA Dr Usham Deben as chief guest and Mantak village chief K Cheiraojao Kom as president with MPCB environmental engineer Dr W Roshan Singh and scientist (C) Kh Tomba speaking as resource persons on 'Municipal Solid Waste', 'E-waste', 'Hazardous waste', 'Bio-medical waste', 'Water Pollution', 'Air Pollution' and 'Single Use Plastics Management'.
In his address, Dr Deben observed that in past there were fear of arms race in the world, but now there is apprehension about impact of pollution and climate change across the countries with Manipur too experiencing increase in pollution level due to unregulated disposal of waste.
He expressed shock over huge quantities of plastic bottles floating in water bodies during the recent flood.
Mentioning that the government alone cannot stop pollution, use of single use plastic and regulate waste disposal, Dr Deben emphasised that public awareness and civic sense is need of the hour.
He also stressed on segregation of waste materials and their proper disposal.
As part of the programme, Higher Secondary Examination 2024 science stream 9th position holder Mangte Manghoikim Kom was presented with cash prize by MLA Dr S Deben.
Later, similar programme were also held at Wabagai Mayai Leikai community hall, Wabagai Makha Leikai and Keirak Keithel Lampak community hall.
