U-TRUST alleges torture of inmates at rehab centre

Condemning alleged violation of rights of drug users at Punshi Lambi Rehabilitation Centre in the strongest terms, Union of Treatment and Rehabilitation of Users for Social Transformation (U- TRUST) has appealed to all concerned not to repeat such inhumane acts while also urging authority concerned to intervene in the matter.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club, here, on Friday, vice president Naorem Budha said U-TRUST received reports about beating of inmates at Punshi Lambi Rehabilitation Centre on July 9.During visit to the centre the next day, they discovered that some drug users had been forcibly taken and physically abused, and immediately rescued and placed them in a safe rehabilitation centre certified by the Social Welfare Department for one night.
Budha further informed that the following day, families of the inmates were called for a meeting during which it came to light that in addition to charging for treatment, the centre insisted on paying extra fees, which he claimed tarnish reputation of other privately run drug de-addiction centres in the state.
Further stating that the rescued inmates have been transferred to a centre recognised by the Social Welfare Department for their treatment, vice president contended that attempts to reach out to functionaries of Punshi Lambi Rehabilitation Centre proved futile it remained closed since disclosure of the incident.
