Two earthquakes rock state, tremors felt in NE

Imphal, March 05 2025:
A moderate earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck on Wednesday, rocking the entire state.
The tremor occurred at 11:06:37 am (1ST) and was felt at 11:06:50 am at the Seismological Observatory of Manipur University, according to a press release issued by the university's Department of Earth Sciences, Seismological Observatory.
The epicentre was recorded at 24°40.42'N/94°40.20'E, approximately 76 km east of Imphal and 12 km east of Huimine Thana in Kamjong-Chassad Sub-Division of Kamjong district.
The depth of the earthquake was estimated to be around 90 km.
The press release further mentioned that most felt earthquakes in the region originate from an area near the Chindwin River, passing through Shwepyiaye town, Hkamti district, Sagaing region of Myanmar.
Additionally, another earthquake of 4.4 magnitude was recorded at 12:20:40 pm (IST), with its epicentre located 14 km south of the previous 5.5 magnitude earthquake.
There were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties.
Wednesday's earthquake was also felt in Assam and Meghalaya as per report received by The People's Chronicle.
According to officials of the Regional Seismological Centre, Shillong the tremors were felt in Assam, Meghalaya and other parts of the northeast region.
