Imphal, December 31 2024:
Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI) reportedly treated a rare and life-threatening case of bowel perforation caused by a fish bone.
In a release, SHRI informed that a multidisciplinary team, led by consultant general and laparoscopic surgeon Dr Chandragupta Chongtham and consultant radiologist Dr Dimpu Gangmei, diagnosed and treated the patient admitted to Shija Hospitals on December 21, with severe abdominal pain, nausea and other complications.
Initially, the patient's symptoms were suspected to indicate a tumour during evaluation at another healthcare facility.
However, advanced imaging techniques and expert analysis by Dr Dimpu revealed that the issue was caused by a fish bone stuck in the intestine, resulting in a perforation and a pocket of infection.
The complexity of the case was further compounded by the presence of gallstones, which increased the patient's discomfort and risk, it said.
According to the release, Dr Chandragupta, an expert in minimal invasive surgery, performed a keyhole procedure to remove the fish bone and addressed the associated complications on December 24 .
The surgery involved separating internal scar tissues, extracting the fish bone, removing the gallbladder, and placing drains in the abdominal area to prevent fluid accumulation.
This advanced approach ensured a precise operation, minimised risks, and supported a quicker recovery, it maintained.
"This case demonstrates the importance of early diagnosis and the role of advanced surgical techniques in saving lives.
Timely treatment prevented severe complications such as sepsis and life-threatening infections," the release quoted Dr Chandragupta as saying.
It informed that the patient was discharged in stable condition on December 27 .
