Imphal, May 29 2025:
Four major transporters bodies have jointly resolved to stop the collection of donations from truck drivers operating along the National Highway 2 starting June 1, citing growing hardships faced by the truckers.
The resolution was taken during a joint meeting of Manipur Drivers' Association (MDA), Manipur Gorkha Motor Workers' Welfare Union, Senapati District Truck Owners' Association, and Senapati District Truck Drivers' Union, held on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters at Awang Sekmai, MDA president Saikhom Babudhon announced the decision and urged all other associations and groups operating along the highway to refrain from such collection practices.
He said that as truck drivers are enduring immense challenges and financial pressure the meeting unanimously decided that donation collection must be stopped to ease their burden.
Babudhon also condemned the recent abduction of a truck driver from Kaiphundai area along NH-37 by unidentified miscreants.
Appealing to those responsible to release the driver at the earliest on humanitarian grounds, he stressed the need for ensuring the safety and dignity of transport workers across the state.
