Imphal, November 26 2021:
Taking serious note of the rising number of hit-and-run accidents that happen during the night, Thangmeiband AC MLA Kh Joykisan has stressed the need for the Home Department to look into the matter and take up requisite steps to apprehend the guilty drivers.
On Friday morning, Joykisan paid a visit to Echel Express sports journalist Yensenbam Samarjit of Heirangoithong Jaganath Achouba Leirak, who sustained injuries in a hit-and-run case, and extended monetary assistance as part of his (Joykisan) relief support to media persons.
Samarjit was reportedly hit by a white-coloured Bolero near Khagempalli Huidrom Leikai late evening on September 12, breaking his right leg in two places and leaving him in serious condition.
Speaking on the sidelines, MLA Joykisan remarked that incidents of large vehicles hitting two wheelers or pedestrians and running away during night time are increasing at an alarming rate.
The people most at risk are media persons.
It is cruel and evil of someone to hurt others and then flee without offering any help, he added.
Urging the state Home Department to take up steps to apprehend the drivers/vehicles involved, the MLA suggested increasing the resolution of the CCTV cameras installed in Imphal including cameras that could provide a clear picture of the vehicle registration numbers.
"Life is unpredictable.
It is wrong to flee the scene after one has hit someone.
However, there is some stereotype at play as people often resort to beating up the driver of a vehicle involved in a collision, without ascertaining who is at fault," he noted.
Presently, the injured journalist is recuperating at home.
If the involved person(s) were to come and enquire about his condition in addition to providing the necessary help, the family would not be harsh.
If the person is afraid of visiting Samarjit's home, he/she could enquire at AMWJU or at Samarjit's office, the MLA opined.
On top of this, the media persons are the most mature and civilised group of people.
They act as a mirror to prevent the society from straying onto the wrong path.
Thus, they only relay the truth to the people even if they are criticised for it, as they uphold credibility and trust.
Hence, in addition to being magnanimous, one should have the courage to apolbgise for the wrong they have done, he further stated.
Meanwhile, police should detain those found driving in night in an inebriated condition.
Accidents can happen anywhere.
But, preventive measures will help save precious lives, Joykisan stressed.
