Kakching police briefed on human rights

Imphal, February 25 2025:
Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) conducted an awareness campaign for police officers of Kakching district on Tuesday at the SP's Conference Hall in collaboration with Kakching district police.
The full MHRC team, including member Kangjam Khagendra Singh, secretary Haobam Rosita, head of the Investigation Division IGP Mamata Wahengbam, along with the under-secretary, law officers, and investigation team participated in the programme.
Since January 2021, the MHRC has been conducting awareness campaigns for police officers under the theme "Needs of Police Reforms to Ensure Human Rights" .

This initiative, undertaken in accordance with the Protection of Human Rights Act;1993, aims to educate police officers - particularly officer-in-charges and investigation officers - on the guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) .
The goal is to ensure compliance with these directives in law enforcement practices.
The programme was attended by Kakching superintendent of police Th Vikramjit Singh, additional SPs Binoy Chongtham, and A Romendro Singh, and 26 other police officers.
Key discussions during the session covered the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, which serves as the legal foundation for human rights commissions in India, as well as the Paris Principles, international guidelines that uphold the independent functioning of human rights institutions.
The deliberations emphasised the urgent need for police reforms in light of ongoing ethnic violence that began on May 3, 2023.As part of the initiative, the MHRC distributed copies of "A Basic Handbook for Human Rights Advocates and Investigation Officers".
MHRC member Khagendra urged police officers to adhere to prescribed legal guidelines while maintaining law and order.
