173 cases of violence against women, kids this year: WAD

Manipur witnessed 173 reported cases of violence against women and children with 125 occurring in general and 48 specifically linked to Manipur conflict as per reports published by state dailies from January 1 to November 24, 2024 .
According to a data compiled by Women Action for Development (WAD), out of 48 cases of crime/violence against women and children in Manipur linked with the conflict, there were eight cases of murder, nine deaths of women in violence, five splinter/ bullet injuries, 25 cases of assault and one suicide case.
Out of the 125 reported general cases of violence against women and children, five were suicide, two life attempts, nine rapes, six molestations, one attempt to kidnap, 27 missing cases, eight murders, 11 suspicious deaths, nine assaults, one cyber-crime, four bullet injuries, five kidnappings, one casualty during delivery, five attempts to rape, one attempt to suicide, 29 cheating cases and one victim of medical negligence.
In a release, WAD programme coordinator Aphun Saiphu said that International day for the elimination of violence against women and girl observed every year on November 25 will be held this year on the theme 'Towards 30 years of Beijing Declaration and platform for Action: Unite to end violence against women and girls'.
The ongoing conflict in Manipur, which began on May 3, 2023, has exacerbated the existing crisis of violence against women and children, further compounding their suffering, Aphun pointed out, while condemning the failure to save the lives of people and end the violence persisting for more than 18 months despite heavy deployment of security forces.
Recalling several other incidents of violence against women and children, she said that the abduction and killing of three women and three children should be condemned globally.
