Forest guards trained on snake identification, rescue

Forest Department's Central Forest Division in collaboration with Manipur University's Department of Zoology organised a one-day workshop on snake identification, rescue, and snakebite awareness for forest guards at Mantripukhri Forest Office on Tuesday.
As per a release, the workshop aimed at acquainting forest guards with critical skills end knowledge on safe and effective handling of snake-related incidents was attended by Central Forest Division's divisional forest officer (DFO) N Ganesh, DCF P&S Vikram Nadhe, Chandel DFO Abhijit, MU Department of Zoology professor Naorem Mohilal Meitei and associate professor Dr Sivakumar V.The workshop covered topics such as identifying different snake species found in Manipur, safe methods of rescuing snakes, and first aid techniques for snakebite victims.
Experts from the Department of Zoology led interactive sessions, offering hands-on demonstrations and theoretical insights to the participants.
In his opening remarks, DFO Ganesh stressed that the workshop is part of ongoing efforts by the Division and MU to promote wildlife conservation with the onset of the 70th Wildlife Week celebration 2024 and ensure the safety of forest guards in their daily duties.
"With snake-related incidents being common in the region, the training provided is expected to improve the safety and effectiveness of forest personnel in mariaging human-snake interactions," he said.
During the programme, Prof N Mohilal Meitei gave a presentation emphasising the importance of such workshops in enhancing the skills of forest guards and safeguarding wildlife, added the release.
