Imphal, January 24 2025:
Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has urged the government to clarify on the confusion arising out of the introduction of fourth year of undergraduate courses in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) .
In a press meet held at its Kwakeithel office on Friday, DESAM secretary (education) Oinam Romesh recalled submission of a memorandum to the state's education minister on October 21 last with regard to the four-year undergraduate programme, with a copy of the same also addressed to the Education commissioner.
However, no action has been taken even after three months have passed.
On October 31, 2023, the MU registrar wrote to the Directorate of University & Higher Education to identify the colleges which are ready to introduce the four-year courses.

However, no response has been given on the matter till date.
According to the NEP, students pursuing the four-year undergraduate programme can exit with appropriate certifications, such as certificate for first year, diploma for second year, degree for three years and honours or research with honours for the final year.
At present, students are nearing completion of three years under MU and the session for the final year should start from June-July.
In addition, students wanting to study MA/MSc/MCom or other master courses must appear for PG-CUET.
The last date for PG-CUET registration has been fixed on February 1 this year, he added.
Pointing out that NEP-2020 clearly states students who have completed the four-year undergraduate programme need not study for two-year MA/MSc/MCom course, Romesh said that many students want to continue research in their field of study.
Furthermore, as per the UGC, students pursuing the final year-research with honours, should have a total credit score of 7.5 CGPA i.e., 75 per cent and the department concerned must have at least two guides.
Stating that the above guidelines are creating confusion amongst the students on which college is offering the four year undergraduate programme, and whether CUET is still mandatory, he opined that there might be no students pursuing masters in MU for the year 2025-26 .
As such, he urged the government to clarify the confusing matters within 24 hours to prevent any delay on the academic career of the students and resulting consequences of the same.
