Imphal, January 23 2025:
Locals residing along the road from the New Checkon traffic point to Porompat on Thursday blocked the accident-prone section, Which had remained unrepaired for a protracted period.
People settling in areas covered by New Checkon Youth Club along with volunteers of Residents' Welfare Association (RWA) laid tree branches and bamboos to block the road near the Old Checkon traffic point.
In this regard, Youth Club president Thounaojam Dijen said that the road has been left unrepaired for almost two years, despite repeated requests to the authority concerned.
Moreover, the drainage along the road has been blocked due to ongoing construction of government quarters nearby, and as such, water from broken water supply pipes keep flooding the area year-round, as the water cannot flow down to Takhelkhong, he rued.
Potholes on the road are increasing day by day, leading to rise in road accidents.
For safety reasons, the road was closed off, he reasoned and urged the government and the authorities concerned to repair both the road and the drainage system.
He stated that even though the road stretch is akin to a lifeline leading to JNIMS, SP Imphal East, DC and other key government offices, the locals have been constrained to enforce the road block till initiation of repair work.
