Imphal, March 22 2025:
A five-member delegation of Supreme Court Judges, led by Justice BR Gavai visited Loktak Lake on Saturday, appreciating its ecological significance and cultural heritage.
Accompanied by Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, MM Sundresh, KV Viswanathan, and N Kotiswar Singh, as well as the Chief Justice and Judges of the Manipur High Court, the delegation explored Northeast India's largest freshwater lake.
The team was welcomed by Loktak Development Authority (LDA) chairman M Asnikumar and project director Ng Sanajaoba.
During their visit, the judges were briefed on the lake's vital role as the cradle of Manipuri civilisation, supporting thousands of livelihoods and hosting a rich biodiversity, including the endangered Sangai deer, the state animal.
The delegation also learned about the lake's potential in water sports and eco-tourism, which are seen as avenues for sustainable development.
However, discussions also centred on the environmental challenges facing Loktak, such as pollution, ecological degradation, and unregulated human activities.
Asnikumar outlined conservation initiatives aimed at wetland restoration and sustainable management, highlighting community-driven efforts to protect the lake's fragile ecosystem.
Commenting on the visit, Asnikumar described it as a historic moment for Manipur, emphasising that the judges' presence signified a crucial step toward peace, harmony, and justice.
He expressed hope that their engagement with the state's environmental and humanitarian concerns would lead to stronger legal and policy interventions, ensuring the protection of Loktak Lake and fostering stability in Manipur.
The Supreme Court judges' visit has brought fresh attention to the urgent need for conservation efforts and legal measures to safeguard Loktak Lake.
Their interactions with local authorities and affected communities reflect a broader commitment to justice, environmental sustainability, and community welfare in the region, Asnikumar added.
