Imphal, December 21 2024:
Six students bodies, including DESAM, AIMS, MSF, KSA, SUK and others have demanded immediate appointment of a regular vice-chancellor of Dhanamanjuri University (DMU), warning of intense agitations in case the demand is not fulfilled in due course.
In a press meet held at DESAM's office on Saturday, spokesperson of the student bodies, Mayengbam Somorjit said that on July 10, former DMU registrar Dr Nivedita issued an order on July 10 for appointment of a regular vice chancellor for the university.
However, no action has been initiated regarding the matter allowing it to wallow in suppression for over five months.
He continued in 2017, the DMU Act was passed by the House, and the University was established in 2018 .
At the time, people were excited that the higher education of the state would soon undergo positive changes, and the government was applauded for the same.
However, the dream soon came crashing down and the trust almost broken.
Seven years after its establishment, the university saw only one regular VC, namely Prof Rajmohon.
After his retirement, bureaucrat officers took charge from time to time.
However, the absence of a regular VC has rendered all plans including guidelines and regulations concerning the university, he remarked.
Somorjit further said that after another order was issued in July this year, no action was taken up.
He questioned whether the government has no mechanism to appoint a regular VC, or it is afraid of causing any controversy by appointing people known to them.
He demanded the minister and authority concerned to clarify the same to the people and appoint a regular vice chancellor at the earliest, failing which intense agitations would be launched.
The state government, minister and authority concerned would be responsible for any resulting consequences, he cautioned.
