Imphal, October 21 2024:
Women's Wing of Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has urged the people of Manipur to celebrate Ningol Chakkouba festival, one of the grandest events, by presenting indigenous products as gifts to the 'Ningols' instead of promoting items brought from other states or imported ones.
Addressing media persons at its Lamphelpat office on Monday, COCOMI Women's Wing coordinator Y Leirik Leima acknowledged challenging situation being endured by the people of Manipur, including many without regular source of income for the past 18 months.
She emphasised that Ningol Chakkouba is a time for married women to return to their parents' homes for feasting and sharing joyful moments with their families.
However, in the light of the ongoing crisis, she urged that this year's celebration should not involve gifts sourced from outside the state.
Instead, she advocated purchase of locally made gifts, particularly those crafted by internally displaced persons residing in relief camps.
Such gestures would encourage all, particularly the displaced families and help alleviate some of the challenges they are facing, opined the coordinator.
Chipping in, Wing assistant coordinator Wahengbam Luwangleima noted that Ningol Chakkouba was not celebrated in 2023 due to unrest situation since May of last year.
She highlighted the importance of celebrating the festival, as it strengthens the bond of love between brothers and sisters, while stressing that gifts should be made locally, as had been practice in the past, rather than purchasing items from outside the state.
This practice would help revive the struggling economy of Manipur to some extent, she said.
