Imphal, December 19 2024:
Jiri News Network (JNN) marked its 20th foundation day held on Thursday at Thangjing Hall, Manipur Press Club, here, with presentation of the 2nd Kekrebam Sanaton Singh Memorial Best Journalist Award 2024 .
The award was presented to Impact TV reporter Elangbam Ojitkumar alias Musuk and JNN staff reporter RK Chandrasana.
Both awardees received a cash prize of Rs 10,000, a shawl, and a citation in recognition of their contributions to journalism.
The event was attended by JNN Committee chief advisor and chairperson of the Manipur Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board (MB&OCWWB) K Sarat as chief guest.
Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM) president Khogendra Khomdram presided over the function, while All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) president Bijoy Kakchingtabam and District Information Officer (DIO), Jiribam N Bidyananda were present as the guest of honour and special guest, respectively.
Addressing the gathering, AMWJU president Bijoy emphasised the importance of journalistic ethics and adherence to truth.
He expressed concern over the challenges posed by social media to mainstream journalism, explaining that while print and electronic media operate under established rules, social media remains largely unregulated.
As the ease of sharing information through smartphones often sully image of media houses, journalists must exercise caution while sourcing news from social media to avoid legal complications, he said.
Highlighting Jiribam's strategic importance as a trade hub for Manipur, Bijoy urged residents to recognise the district's potential and make decisions that benefit the state as a whole.
Chief guest K Sarat reflected on the evolution of information access in Jiribam, recalling the past when newspapers rarely reached the district on time due to poor road conditions.
Earlier, receiving a newspaper in the morning in Jiribam was an occasional event, as it takes days for newspapers to arrive from Imphal due to bad road condition.
Today, however, information is instantly accessible online, he remarked.
He also announced that starting next year, the JNN award will be expanded to recognise three journalists annually, with an additional recipient from Assam.
