Imphal, January 18 2019:
Lok Sabha MP T Meinya has warned that Manipur and the entire North East will face a very grim situation of the CAB 2016 is passed in the Rajya Sabha.
The MP was speaking at the inaugural function of a newly constructed godown and office building of Konthoujam Lairembi Leikai Development Association today.
When the Bill was tabled in the Rajya Sabha, majority of the Opposition leaders raised strong objections and they also pointed out that there was no consensus among the members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) .
As the Opposition members' appeal to refer the Bill to a select committee went unheeded, they walked out of the Lok Sabha.
The Central Government's effort to table the same Bill in Rajya Sabha did not bear fruit as the Opposition parties enjoy majority in the Upper House, Meinya said.
Saying that the Government would make a second attempt to table the Bill in the Rajya Sabha, the Congress MP pledged that they would make all efforts to see that the Bill is not cleared.
In case the Bill is somehow cleared, the entire North East region including Manipur will face a very grim situation, he warned.
If the Bill is passed forcibly, the Central Government and the State Government should be held accountable for all discords and untoward incidents resulting thereof, he added.
Former MLA K Sarat was also present at the inaugural function.
