Maj Chongthamia remembered on his 117th death Manipur

Imphal, January 17 2025: United Chongthas observed the 117th death anniversary of Major Chongthamia along with presenting the Mia Singh Major Warrior Award posthumously to Saikhom Sanjitkumar of Uripok, who died in the ongoing violence in the state.

The death anniversary event held at Manipur Press Club on Friday was attended by United Chongthas chief patron Ch Manglemjao Meetei as chief guest, advisor Chongtham Lukhoi Meitei as president and Salai Apunba Nupi Lamjing Lup (SANULAL) chief advisor Thingnam Ibethoi as guest of honour.

According to United Chongthas convener Chongtham Romen Singh, death anniversary of Major Chongthamia is observed to instil the spirit of patriotism to future generation by remembering the supreme sacrifice made by Major Chongthamia and his role for the erstwhile sovereign kingdom of Manipur.

Major Chongthamia valour in the Khongjom battle of fhe Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891 and his dedication for Manipur were well recorded even by the British, apart from Cheitharol Kunibaba.

After the war, Major Chongthamia was exiled to Port Blair after trial.

After the end of exile period, Major Chongthamia did not return to Manipur but stayed in Tripura where he breathed his last at Narankhama village, he recalled.

Regarding Mia Singh Major Warrior Award, Romen said the award carries a citation, Rs 10,000 cash and a portrait of Chongthamia to remember the supreme sacrifice made by Chongthamia for the nation.

The award instituted in the year 2023 was received by family members of late Saikhom Sanjitkumar of Uripok, who lost his life atop the Kadangband hill range on July 10, 2023 .
