Imphal, January 12 2025:
Nongdam Meira Paibi Lup organised a sit-in protest at Nongdam community hall under Lamlai assembly constituency on Sunday, demanding the unconditional release of six village volunteers arrested by security forces on December 14 last year.
The protest is part of a continuing series of demonstrations across the state, condemning the crackdown on village volunteers.
The protestors accused the government of failing to protect the lives and properties of people following the outbreak of violence on May 3, 2023 .
They asserted that the village volunteers stepped in to safeguard their communities in the absence of adequate government intervention.
The protests began after a police commando operation on December 14, at Salungpham, Thoubal district, resulted in the death of a youth and the arrest of six others.
Protestors have been demanding the immediate dismissal of the police commando personnel involved in the incident.
Protestors reiterated their call for justice and urged the government to halt the ongoing crackdown on village volunteers, warning that such actions could further alienate and hurt the affected communities.
