Many NIOS students likely to miss exam: TKS

Imphal, April 09 2015 : Over 400 students of National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) are going to appear the upcoming exam 2015, but many of them will not be able to write it as they are going to experience extreme difficulties because of the examination centre that has been allocated to a school � Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in the village of Ramva/Lambui� which is not conveniently accessible for transportation.

Many a times, conducting examinations by this Board have come under constant scrutiny and turmoil and have taken a negative toll on the student community at large, a statement of Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) claimed on Wednesday.

It said the NIOS was opened with the objective of providing education up to pre-degree level, and is one of the three National Boards.

The Board has its centre in Ukhrul district too and it has been providing much needed education to students of the district for the past several years, it said.

There are neither lodges nor homestays to accommodate the students who are coming from all over the district, TKS said, adding that their (students) travelling to and from the exam centre is going to be a quite difficult task.

The statement signed by TKS General Secretary Joel Angkang said no commercial vehicles ply at the time of ending of the examination, which is going to render the examinees without lodging in an unknown area for several days.

The logic behind the allocation of an exam centre in a village where there are no hotels, no proper transport or medical or security facilities has left many students in the lurch this year, TKS said.

It also said that the Regional Director was petitioned for a change in venue but was bluntly turned down, adding that the current exam venue was also forcibly allocated even though the Principal of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya was reluctant due to the same aforementioned reasons.

"This utter disrespect of the student community will not be tolerated by the TKS because this policy goes against the wishes of the entire student community," it warned.

The TKS is therefore sending a message to the concerned authorities urging them to shift the exam centre to a more convenient area like the district headquarters.
