House Committee formed to check illegal immigrants

In view of the unrest in the state due to influx of illegal immigrants, among other factors, a 12-member Committee has been formed in Wednesday's session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly to monitor influx and number of unchecked settlements in the hill areas.
During the session, Assembly speaker Th Satyabrata announced that a 'Committee to inquire into the influx of illegal immigrants and unnatural growth of new villages in the State of Manipur', consisting of 12 members of the House, has been formed under Rule No 305 (A) of Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business of the Assembly.
Water Resources minister Awangbow Newmai has been appointed as the chairman, while PHED minister L Susindro, Law and Legislative Affairs minister Th Basanta Kumar, Hill Areas Committee chairman and MLA Dinganglung Gangmei, and MLAs K Meghachandra, Th Lokeshwor, Md Abdul Nasir, Leishiyo Keishing, Surjakumar Okram, Kh Ibomcha and Th Shanti are the members, in addition to Tribal Affairs and Hills minister Letpao Haokip.
The tenure of the Committee will be three months and it is to present a report to the House within the specified period.
With regard to announcement made by the speaker, opposition member Th Lokeshwor objected to appointment of Let-pao Haokip, who has refused to attend the present and the last session of the Assembly, and requested for replacement of Letpao with another member.
He further said that the Committee would have hard time in compiling report on the unrest brought by influx of illegal immigrants, if a member who cannot participate is appointed.
However, the speaker stated that the Committee was formed with the approval of the House members and as such, urged all to accept Letpao Haokip's inclusion.
