Committee calls for education disturbance free zone

Commemorating the 17th Disturbance Free Educational Zone Demand Day, Coordinating Committee on Disturbance Free Education Zone Demand organised a one-day discourse on 'disturbance free educational zone' at Manipur College, Chingamakhong on Friday.
Speaking at the discourse, Committee convenor and DESAM president Mayengbam Somorjit recalled launch of the campaign in 2008 and subsequent observance from the following year by forming a coordinating committee comprising representatives of teachers and parents' bodies and organisations working in the education sector.
Pointing out that streamlining the education system to face challenges of the 21st century is essential for progress of the society and the community, he regretted that despite efforts being made to achieve the same the education sector in the state continues to encounter disturbances from different quarters consequently hindering its improvement.
While opining that the crisis besieging the state at the juncture entails involvement of educated minds to bring solution, he called upon all to shoulder the responsibility of making education disturbance free and to ensure that the education sector is not affected as and when there is social movement.
Instead, the sector should be kept out of socially disruptive movements so as to produce quality human resources who can face contemporary challenges and aid in establishing a vibrant society, Somorjit added.
During the discourse, demands were raised to protect the education system from disruptions with the Committee also calling upon armed organisations and groups to abstain from placing demands for cash or kind on educational institutions.
It also urged the government to stop politicisation of education, ensure that educational policies and practices remain unbiased and focus on student welfare.
Furthermore, the Committee urged for framing a law to guarantee minimum of 220 days of normal classes in educational institutions, and promoting consistent and uninterrupted learning while cautioning that the government s failure to take timely initiatives would only hinder the education system or cause students to suffer.
Additionally, the committee highlighted the need to eradicate corruption, nepotism, and favouritism in education-related matters.
Committee chairman and AMCTA president M Lokendro, UARSOM president Laishram Joy Khuman, AMRPSWA president Doren Kha-Nganba, AMSGO secretary Sougrakpam Sumati, MGHSLWA president Laimayum Ishwarjit, AMTEI president Dr Nareng-bam Rajivkumar, PSDC general secretary Salam Jotin, AMESTA president Angomjambam Keilyani, COTA co-convenor Dr Longjam Ritendro, CESM consultant Kongkham Indubhusan, AMSSTA president Maibam Kennedy and AIMS president Oinam Nikerson attended the discourse as presidium members and also shared their opinions.
Leaflets, posters and slogans for making education disturbance free zone were also released on the occasion.
