Thoubal, June 03 2024:
As the water of Thoubal River continues to flow murkily throughout the year, all water supply schemes taken up till date are having a tough time to provide safe drinking water to the people.
Among the schemes, the reservoirs of Sabaltongba Water Supply scheme operated by Thoubal Municipal Council constructed under Public Health Engineering, Thoubal Division has become so murky that the sediments have blocked the flow, halting the supply of water in Ward No 3 .
As such, the consumers of Ward No.3 have been deprived of safe drinking water.
However, Ward No 13 caretaker councillor Sanasam Ibotombi led the Council staff in dredging up the sediments settled at the reservoir using a JCB on Sunday.
In this regard, Ibotombi informed that Sabaltongba Water Supply scheme was taken up under JNURM to supply water to consumers in Ward No 11,11 and 13 .
However, the filtering process was interrupted due to the increased murkiness of Thoubal River.
Apart from this, as the scheme is not run by PHED, it is difficult to purchase the materials or chemicals needed for the same.
The non-payment of water tax by the consumers has also delayed the payment of monthly honorarium to the council staff, he conveyed.
Thus, Ibotombi urged for the government authority concerned to look into the matter, while seeking support from the people including payment of the water taxes in time.
He informed that a counter to facilitate consumers in payment of the taxes would soon be opened.
